- Street children and Child laborers
- Destitute women
Problem statement and Justification:
Street children constitute a marginalized population in most urban centers of the world. The problems of street children are more significant in the developing than developed world and it was estimated that more than 100 million children live and work on the streets in the developing countries. According to the Government of Uganda [GOU, 2003], the population of street children in Uganda was estimated to be over 10000.Most of them being in Kampala city.
War, poverty, urbanization, rapid economic growth, the breakdown of families, and domestic violence are the immediate causes of this phenomenon’s growing proportions. Young [2004] underlines that almost 90% of the street children interviewed in her field study cited negative factors. [Mainly mistreatment by parents or guardians, diffuse poverty or parental death]. As their main catalysts in their decision to move to the street, it is also notable that street children in Kampala mainly come from central and western regions due to mistreatment, domestic violence and poverty, others are driven by drought and famine in the Eastern Uganda, some are fleeing the turmoil caused by the civil war in southern Sudan.
Kasagge [1998] observed that 53%of street children in Kampala live in Mengo Kisenyi densely populated with informal work opportunities. looking for scrap collecting empty bottles or tin, cleaning cars or shoes ,carrying heavy loads ,selling plastic ,working as housemaids ,fetching water , transporting luggage, looking for customers for tax ,selling small items are the main activities [Nassejje ,1992 ,oloya, 1995;Anich2006]
Most children between 14 and 19 use drugs like marijuana, taking inhalants, and consuming alcohol. 80% of the children have Delinquent behavior .this include stealing, fighting, rape and self-directed aggression. The delinquent behavior predominantly occurred in the context of the peer gang but a significant proportion of the deviant behavior is solitary.
At Nitwiriza; over the years we have managed to transform the social behavior of the children. A great number being able to get aid from different foster homes while, majority have been reunited with their families. A given number have not been able to camp up with the available resources and hope given to them thus being taken up by gangs and drugs. Death has also robed us our dear ones; through exposure to the horrors of the street, many die due to lack of medical care. YAHAYA; at an early age of 13, died of food poisoning as he was poisoned to death. LORANCE; died of electricity as he was collecting scrap to feel his empty stomach. Sirajji; was mobbed after stabbing his friend over 150 shillings fight .They all died below 15years of age they lived there childhood on exposure of hash weather, disease with no medication, cold nights, survived on leftovers without dreaming and at a time they were starting to have a new life of love and hope ,we shared!! Death took them!
It is not easy to talk about girls; imagine a 10 year old or less alone exposed to the world in the dark of the night, there is no word to explain what these girls go through. It’s an thinkable. No one looking up for them. No program reaches out to them. During day, they are always in video holes or hideouts. In the night move engaging in sex work and drugs. Despite of that most programs are looking into the lives of boys those who could reach out to them have very limited resources to engage with both genders because if done could cause more harm than good.
The population of street children is increasing every day as there is a high number of children joining the streets yet, their habitation is very poor. They are encountering. Problems like poor health conditions, nutritional problems, low educational standards, poor amenities and societal discrimination, sexual exploitation, health care discrimination and hazardous works in unorganized sectors, alcoholism, drugs, etc. There is a wide gap that no intervention programs have been executed here to change their life style so far. The condition of the street children is becoming worsened day by day. When they are left uncared, there is a possibility that they will become antisocial element causing problems to self as well as society.
In order to make positive changes in the social and economic status of street children in Kampala, NITWIRIZA has proposed to carry out welfare activities and create a foster home for them and seeking financial support from donor agencies.
